Former Capitol Hill staffer Hilary Jochmans is the Founder of PoliticallyInFashion, a community for all those in fashion – designers, manufacturers, artisans, retailers, recyclers, resellers, models, lawyers, reporters, consumers – to learn about legislative and regulatory issues of key importance to the industry.
The mission is to educate individuals on public policy; and empower them with this knowledge; to then engage with elected representatives on how these issues impact companies and consumers.
The PoliticallyInFashion Council, the advocacy arm of the organization, is designed for thought-leaders who recognize the need to engage in the development of public policy initiatives critical to the fashion industry. They are committed to sharing their stories and concerns with like-minded advocates and the policy makers who can effect positive change for the industry.
The Council’s mission is to bridge the information gap between industry and policy makers and provide an educational forum for industry leaders to learn directly about key legislation and regulations impactful to their industry and its future. It is also an opportunity for elected officials to learn first-hand about the successes, challenges, and opportunities for the industry’s labor, manufacturing and environmental sectors with a focus on sustainability.

Founded in 2020, PoliticallyInFashion was designed to give a voice in Washington to the diverse segments of the fashion industry. Members care passionately about supporting the American fashion industry with a focus on domestic production, jobs and sustainability. Hilary recognized the need for this space after 15+ years working in senior staff positions in the House of Representatives and Senate, and as the Director of the New York State Governor’s Office in Washington DC. Hilary is also an attorney and former co-chair of the New York City Bar Association Fashion Law Committee.

The US Office of Science and Technology Policy issued a request for the public to provide comments as they develop a plan for advanced manufacturing. The fashion industry needs to be part of this conversation! The Council submitted comments calling for strategic government investment, partnerships between the public and private sectors and support for educational programs and degrees which could reinvigorate the industry providing good jobs, growing the economy across sectors and strengthening national security.
